This is both symptomatic of tone-deafness, and borne out of a belief that the Administration's defenders will have their back on literally anything. That's why you saw the President playing guitar and eating birthday cake in the middle of Hurricane Katrina. And that's why, during a crisis in the Middle East, right after a joint press conference with Tony Blair discussing a cease fire, with dozens dying in Lebanon and Israel and Iraq, you get a meeting like this:



On the other hand, of course Bush met with the "American Idol" finalists. They have better approval ratings that he does.

And they've received more votes.
