Spinach!
The FDA is now banning all fresh and bagged spinach in response to an outbreak of E. coli bacteria that has sickened about 100 people nationwide. This is an enormous issue in the state of California, as it could cost growers as much as $100 million dollars, by some estimates. Most US spinach is grown in "America's Salad Bowl" in California.
This is a very broad brush being applied to spinach farmers, the vast majority of whom had nothing to do with this outbreak (One story linked a lot of the outbreak to one grower). One would think the governor of the state set to lose all this money would try to at least allay concerns and stand up for this vital economic sector. I think inspection and study would do a lot more good than a blanket ban.
