Attack in Afghanistan
The brazenness of it all is striking.
At least 19 people have been killed and 11 injured in a suicide attack outside Afghanistan's main US base during a visit by US Vice-President Dick Cheney.
Mr Cheney, on an unannounced visit to the region, was staying at the Bagram base, 60km (40 miles) from Kabul.
The US military said the explosion did not appear to be aimed at the vice-president, who was safely inside at the time.
But they said it was a "direct attack" on the base, which was on red alert.
There's a giant Taliban offensive slated for the spring and this was the Lexington-and-Concord-like first shot in that war. We need more troops there and we're providing less, so we can bring no security to Baghdad. Britain shifted its troops out of Basra and into Afghanistan; they are not bugging out but putting their forces where they're needed the most.
I didn't think it was possible to throw this many zeroes in the war on terror. We're watching the foreign policy equivalent of a perfect game. Decades from now they'll be talking about it and saying "Yeah, I was there when they fucked up everything they touched." People will lie and say they were born just to brag that they were witness to the opposite of greatness.
