One Of Those "Oh-Shit" Days

Turkish helicopters have struck inside Iraq, a possible prelude to larger cross-border action despite pleading from American and Iraqi officials that they would internally deal with PKK rebels. Four Turkish groups were killed by rebels today. The Turks will not wait forever.

Benazir Bhutto has now broken completely with Pervez Musharraf after being put under house arrest for the second time. The preferred American solution was to have Musharraf and Bhutto in a power-sharing agreement. That's not going to happen anymore. John Negroponte has been sent to Pakistan to try and relieve tensions. But now, even the Bhutto factions are becoming violent. This is Iran 1979 all over again.

In the southern city of Karachi, Bhutto supporters fired on two police stations in a poor district where her party is popular, and police used tear gas to disperse demonstrators, senior police officer Fayyaz Khan said. A 9-year-old boy and a 22-year-old woman were wounded in crossfire between demonstrators and police, witnesses said.
