Al Qaeda Is Not A Dump Truck, It's A Series Of Tubes

Ted Stevens is digging an even deeper hole than John McCain did when he tried to sneak this one past the goalposts.

We expect Al Qaeda to come out some time today with a new manifesto where they ought to be using weapons of mass destruction against the United States. That means that they're realizing they can't win in Iraq. I think they're going to change their way of doing business. And I think we have to be on the alert. These people are all over the world. Al Qaeda's not just in Iraq. They're in Iran. They're in the Philippines. Sen Inouye and I went down to [indistinguishable]. They're over in Indonesia. They're all over.

While Al Qaeda is a decentralized network, the Sunni militants are not in the Shiite Islamic Republic of Iran. Sorry, Ted. No sale.

And when politicians above a certain age make elementary mistakes, particularly when they're running against younger opponents, the contrast of which tends to emphasize their advanced years, mistakes like this are even more damaging. Because you start to believe that the politician in question doesn't know what he's talking about. Because he doesn't.

(Stevens voted against the GI Bill, too. That's going to help him.)
