Lying With Impunity

It's amazing to me how much of conservative thought is based on outright lying. These aren't opinions that you could see both ways, just total lies.

On Fox & Friends, Mike Huckabee falsely asserted, "When Katrina, a Cat-5 hurricane, hit the Gulf Coast, not one drop of oil was spilled off of those rigs out in the Gulf of Mexico." In fact, according to a report prepared for the federal government by an international consulting firm, damages related to Hurricane Katrina resulted in 70 spills from outer continental shelf structures with a total volume of approximately 11,104 barrels of oil and petroleum products.

You could see the Katrina-caused oil spill from space. There's documentary evidence. Yet not only every conservative columnist, but the current governor of the state of Louisiana insists that no oil was spilled there.

Of a similar ilk is this myth that China is drilling off the coast of Cuba, which conservatives have been spouting for three weeks despite it being totally untrue.

This is important to understand. You have one political party whose entire worldview is shaped by lies. You have another political party that is oftentimes too timid to call the lies for what they are. And you have a media completely unwilling to play referee.

If nothing changes, you literally have a country's citizens unable to get the truth.
