More International Crises While-U-Wait

Earlier today I mentioned all of our foreign policy triumphs. Here's another one.

U.S. military helicopters launched an extremely rare attack Sunday on Syrian territory close to the border with Iraq, killing eight people in a strike the government in Damascus condemned as "serious aggression."

A U.S. military official said the raid by special forces targeted the network of al-Qaida-linked foreign fighters moving through Syria into Iraq. The Americans have been unable to shut the network down in the area struck because Syria was out of the military's reach.

"We are taking matters into our own hands," the official told The Associated Press in Washington, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the political sensitivity of cross-border raids.

This is directly analogous to the widening of the Vietnam War into Cambodia by Nixon. It's all disguised under the claim that we're saving the lives of the troops by cracking down on cross-border attacks, but this ends up to be far more destabilizing and dangerous for Americans around the world. Syria is a sovereign nation (precisely the kind that John McCain said would be off-limits to attacks, by the way, wonder what he thinks about this). It is entirely probable that their border has been porous and many foreign fighters have flowed through it. But disembarking inside their borders with elite assassination teams and shooting up a town goes well beyond a surgical strike. It's an act of war, plain and simple.

The last three months should be fun, as the Bush Administration deliberately sets traps for a potential Obama Presidency. This is one of them.
