Some Fight Back
With the election 15 days away, you're starting to see the smears bubble up from the McCain campaign to the surface in the most odious ways. Republicans are spray-painting signs reading "Vote for a Terriost" (missing a spellchecker there, buddy). Early voters in North Carolina are being heckled for supporting Obama, and Obama supporters are finding their tires slashed after rallies. It's really pathetic what John McCain has unleashed.
But there are rare moments when people take their dignity back and do something right for a change. These are Republicans saying no to fear, and I think that's great.
There's going to be a major fallout after this election from inside the Republican Party. They ran their smear and fear campaign, and if it doesn't work, they'll have to figure out what to do. I don't hold hope that they'll chart any meaningfully different course, but they certainly could, if they exhibited the same behavior these folks did in driving out hate.
...by the way, great line from Obama dismissing the negative campaigning coming his way.
It's getting so bad that even Senator McCain's running mate denounced his tactics last night. As you know, you really have to work hard to violate Governor Palin's standards on negative campaigning.
